New Keyfob? on 1996 Explorer

My old keyfob stopped working and i was wondering if i can program a newer keyfob to my truck i have a spare keyfob from a 1999 Expedition my gramps gave me. If not what kind of keyfobs can i use for my truck? thanks

Turn the key to the on position about 5 times until you hear the locks cycle This will put the computer into program mode.

Press one of the buttons on the fob within 10 seconds of entering the program mode. You'll hear the locks cycle again.

Will the expedition keyfob work on the explorer since the expedition is a 1999 is has a better lookin keyfob

There a bunch of sales of key fobs on eBay and if you really search and dig into it the 96 explorer seems to fall into the older style key fob which looks different and MAY operate at different frequency., but I'm not 100% on this. I do know that I bought my 96 explorer with no key fobs and recently bought two off eBay for cheap. They are however an older style that are clearly used (as are all the ones I found). So that's why I say that other fob probably is not going to work. Then again it would great if it did!

Nope, has to be a pre-98 remote. For Ex's, 1993-1997 are the old style, and the redesigned fobs work with the 1998-2005 (maybe newer)
