Ok here's the story. I just bought an 02 v8 xlt (70,000 mi). love it. but it does have some problems. I've managed to fix or at least find some of the minor ones with the help of this site. I hope to be fixing an intermittent (erratic) rough idle problem today by replacing the IAC. I will post how that works out.

Now for the help I need.

The engine is very load on start-up. It is so bad that it sounds like a diesel engine. I've tried to isolate it but it's not easy. I now believe it is an exhaust leak because it eventually goes away after anywhere from 30 sec-5 minutes. It seams to be getting worse but it is also getting colder (northeast). If the engine is warm it does not do it. You can hear it best somewhere around the pan,transfer case, and especially in the first passenger side cat. It seams to have no effect on performance however. heres my concern. I also have some valve tapping at start-up. this also eventually goes away. here's my concern, Could this be a spun bearing/ rod knock I'm hearing. I have about a month left on a 50/50 powertrain warranty, so I need to get this resolved soon. Please help.

final note; I'm a firm believer that most problems have happened to someone else at some point. I will gladly post my experiences (including fixes), This is what makes forums like this work.

look forward to speaking with you all.

Thanks,

PS does this board have a spell check (sorry for the poor typing)

Anything, Anyone? Now thinking timing chain tensioner. Any thoughts?

PS the IAC fixed my erratic idle issue. If you hear a sputtering from this area and your getting a bit of a growling noise thought the air intake, this may be your problem. I also had the torn/collapsed elbow hose that has been talked about here. So keep an eye out for that one.

The 4.6 really does not have any timing chain issues. That being said, I have seen them go bad. My brother had a CHiP's Police Interceptor which had 295,000 miles on it, the tensioners went bad on it, and boy was it noisy before it did.

thx for the feedback. I'm going to let the dealer look at this and I'll post their findings. I'd still like some other input if anyone has had a similar problem though. Please!

Got a diagnosis this is what it states;
has lower end knock 2nd start up cancel cylinders drops off 7 anf 8 rec engine assy 5588.91

can anyone help me to interpret this?
thanks!

welcome

I'm probably wrong, but it appears that a portion of the diagnostic printout is missing...

I will call today to try and get clarification. Thanks!
