Hi all,
Glad I found this forum! Been perusing past threads for a couple days, but haven't seen any posts describing my problem, so here goes....
'97 Explorer XLT 4WD
4.0 L V6 SOHC
178,000 miles
Often, but not always, when I shift from park to reverse, I get this grinding noise like something is slipping. I can go on to drive, come back to reverse, and it usually engages and I can back up just fine.
It has never done this when I shift to drive, but, if I'm driving along and let off the gas (coasting) I sometimes hear the same noise and the transmission is obviously not "engaged." I can shift to neutral, come back to drive, give it some gas and all is well.
This problem started about 8 months ago, and I essentially parked it at that time. I really need to get this thing going before winter if economically possible!
Transmission fluid is not low, and looks/smells fine. I've put all the miles on this vehicle except the first 17,000. Has always been an excellent vehicle.
Any suggestions or ideas?
Thanks,
Greg
