92 XLT/98 V8 AWD
Hello all.

Long time "Exploder" driver, been luring on the fora here for a few days.

Originally owned a 1991 XLT 4x4 and ran it until it fell apart at 350,000.
Then purchased a 92 XLT 4x4 with 129k on it and just recently took it off the road 3 weeks ago with 325,000 on it.
Recently purchased a 98 Mountaineer AWD and trying to nurse it back to health.

Thanks for allowing me to join the boards here. Hopefully I can get the help I need when I need it with his newer vehicle and possibly help someone else with my experiences and knowledge.

welcome to site =] glad your a true ex driver too very nice

Thanks. The 98 Mounty is the first I've had with a V8, the other two had the V6 4.0. The V8 sucks a little more gas, but moves when you put the pedal down. I have always loved the explorers since they first came out, especially the first generation. My 92 explorer was the best vehicle I have ever owned, and has driven me more miles with less problems than ever the other brand new vehicles I have ever purchased.

The most expensive repair I have experienced as of yet with these trucks is the A4LD transmission in my 92 XLT. Cost a pretty penny to rebuild it. Not to mention the removal of the front rotors when I did a break job (they were a PAIN).

We'll see how this 98 Mounty holds up. I bought one the same day my volunteer fire department bought one, so we are starting to have some of the common problems with the second generation of the "exploder"....

You live on the Outer Banks year round? Thats gotta be a cold lonely place this time of year. I go to South Port for work once in a while and they always send me in the winter, there is absolutly nothing to do and everything is closed.

I'm not on the Outer Banks, thank goodness. Topsail Island is bad enough this time of year as well. I kinda like it when it is quiet, especially during this time of year. That means I can actually go grocery shopping at the local Food Lion (which I HATE) and not have to stand on line for 30 minutes or so.

It seems like its getting colder and colder here, which is kinda unusual for this area, but the darn wind blowing in off the ocean is a CHILLER...brrrr. I've been waking up to 10 and 15 degree mornings for the last couple of weeks, and working on this truck after getting off work in the evenings until around 8 or 9pm, and its darn cold then too....

Thanks to all of you for your warm welcomes. Alot of the tips, tricks and hints I have read on the forum in the last week have already begun paying off...

Thumbs UP!!

Thanks again!!
