97/98 xlt
I recently purchased a 97 xlt withtraction control. The trans and transfer case, has been swapped with a 98 .Everything with the engine seems to run fine, but the check engine light is on.I took it to auto zone they said it needed a vss,and cam positoning sensor.I changed the vss and the same code still shows up.I found that the transmission wont shift from 2nd to drive unless you run it up to3500 rpm then it shifts very hard. I took it to the dealership they hooked up a laptop to the obd port and drove it.They said the transmission is not sending any info to the pcm. They told me to fix it,They would have to change the gauge cluster, gem, and pcm at about 1200 for parts and 90+ an hr for labor. Can anyone tel me if there is an easier fix?

dealer will take you for a ride you will never forget. If someone at autozone told you to replace vss and cam positioning sensor then do replace both of those things and then reset you computer. Code will not go away by itself. You'll have to either see someone with a code reader or simply disconnect the negative battery cable for about 15 minutes.

and yeah, Welcome to the board!

The battery was disconnected and the codes cleared also with a scanner.Check engine light comes back on after you restart the engine and shows same codes

could be a funny thing with the codes... I just bought an 02 Sport - the owner told me he had it scanned at autozone and they told him to replace spark plugs to get rid of shaky idle... (after reading codes).

I replaced one of the tubes running around the intake (it had a vacuum leak), disconnected the battery and now the CE light is off...

go figure!

If the ce lite goes off great, but will this help my upshift, downshift problem or does the cam positioning sensor have nothing to do with it.

you really confused me with this tranny problem... shifting from 2nd to D?

are you shifting by hand or was that suppose to be in a reverse order?

I sometimes even confuse myself, sorry. When you first start up and tranny is cold,it upshifts and downshifts fine When it warms up it has a hard time to shift from 2nd to drive and d to od. When you let off the gas and coast ,try to get back into the gas,it's like its in nuetral, rev's then slams back in gear. When you coast n lose speed it doesn,t downshift.Stays in drive or o.d. Unless you manually downshift or come to a complete stop.

a couple of things... check oil level - color, smell - when did you last replace AT oil? filter? It also sounds like a sticking valve... something clogged... so see above.

First of all, what exact code is being stored here? Not what the guy at AutoZone said your problem was, but what CODE is being stored? Pxxxx, Pxxxx, etc.

It's telling you what problem the systems have detected. Start there.
