Hey guys. I just joined the site. Ive been doing some work to my dads 98 Explorer 4X4 4.0 SOHC 128k. Theres a few problems that i would like to get some advice on. First off, CEL is on with 171 ans 174 lean both banks. Ive read about the intake gasket problem. I checked all the vaccum lines for cracks or damage but they all seemed fine. Cleaned out the MAF also. Second, there is a grinding noise while the vehicle is moving. I just replaced both front wheel bearings and changed the transfer case fluid. No help whatsoever. I did the check with the transfer case where you jack it up in park and put it in 4X4 high and try to turn the front shaft. It didnt move. I am going to try changing the front diff fluid today. The trans was completely rebuild about 3 or 4 years ago under warranty. Im wondering if the diff has burnt itself out because ever since he bought it you could always hear the diff whining and spooling up. Third problem, the radio display sometimes works and sometimes it doesnt, along with the whole radio itself. I read somewhere about a problem with the heating ducts being too close to the radio and burning something out. Whats the best fix for this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys.

P0171 and P0174

I just got rid of this issue yesterday by changing the upper and lower intake manifold gaskets.

do a search for the radio issue, in fact i think there may be a "sticky" in the second generation forums... my dad had this problem, but he went to an aftermarket player which solved it... but i know for a fact someone has addressed the radio problem with detail.

and welcome! you'll get hooked easily, so watch out! i spent my entire physics class today reading about 410's 5.0 swap.
