Hi,

I don't really know where to post this, but I've looked all over this site trying to find a complete write-up of the SOHC v6 timing cassette, chain and tensioner job. I'm getting ready to do this job, I've got the timing tools, and many other parts and just want to be sure about everything before diving in. I'm no novice and have great help. I'm looking for any advice, shortcuts or other helpful hints that could save time, money or headaches. Thanks in advance for your help!

Chris

Chris,
I have a 2001 Sport Trac with the 4.0 engine. It recently took a dump on me and I've been told that it is possibly the timing chain or the tensioners. I have replaced timing chains on other vehicles but this one has a lot of junk up on top and I am apprehensive about starting the ordeal. It's lucky that I have other forms of transportation and am not in a hurry. I would greatly appreciate any guidance that you can offer during and after your experience. I am contemplating an engine change since mine engine has 210,000 + miles. Please drop me a line, thank you. JD

I'm just buttoning up the engine after doing a timing chain replacement. I'm amazed at how many special tools I had to pick up just to work on this abortion of an engine. You need special metric female torx bits to take off the flywheel, special large male metric torx bits for the head bolts etc.a special tool to remove the fan, not to mention that all the bolts are a single use design. The rear jackshaft plug is not included in the gasket kit.The engine also needs to be re assembled in a specific order ( I found a pdf file from the ford manual online) that also spelled out the balance shaft timing procedure that my chiltons manual did not have.I'm doing this project as a favor for my daughter and it has taken much longer than I had planned.Mostly chasing parts.Good luck and plan on it taking a while. Chuck.
