99 Explorer Sport
Heya guys. Im a new member to this forum, also own a 97 mustang gt convertible. Anyways, I have a 99 Explorer Sport, and a while ago, my tranny started acting up. It is having one heck of a time going to reverse, drive, ETC. When it clicks to reverse, an i start to go backwards, my car shakes like crazy.

Sometimes it wont even shift into drive at all, have to put it to 1st gear, then to autodrive. Was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if so, howd ya fix it?

Thanks for the input!

Brad

Sounds like a trans rebuild is in order. Could be the torque converter not engaging but depending on the miles It might be safer to rebuild it all.

Welcome to the forum!

Also, there is a burning smell comming from the engine, but that could be anything I suppose.

Bah, a tranny rebuild, that was what I was afraid of. Use the explorer for the winter, cant do that with a beat tranny. ANy idea cost of a rebuild?

Also, since this IS my winter car, what is the process of turning this 4x2 into a 4 x4? I know id need a 4x4 tranny, but what is it in the rear that I am gonna need?

BTW, I am a mechanical newb, but learning small things here an there from all the crap thats wrong on my stang :D

Welcome to this forum! Drop the pan, and see if the valve body gasket is flaking apart. Check the torque of the valve body bolts. Use a 0-300 PSI pressure gauge to test the transmission's pressure.

Ok I can drop the pan, looks like just all those bolts come lose. I dont know what to expect tho lol. An how would I check the torque of the valve body bolts? I might have to make a drive to my buddys. As for checking tranny pressure?

Told ya, newb :D

I forgot to add this. When I drive at slow speeds, it makes a loud humming noise, then goes away as i rev an speed up, dunno if this has anything to do with the issue...but if it does, id say it would have to do with the torque converter?

Have you replaced the fluid? Sometimes it works wonders...

Also add a can of shudder guard, may be all you need, unless it's been like this for a long time, and eaten itself from the crud inside.

Well, I had the transmission serviced March 10th 2006. He said it looked bad, but he has seen worse. I added a can of stop leak, not shudder guard. I crawled underneath, the whole outside of the tranny looks like hell. Im afraid to pull the pan an get transmission fluid dosed all over me

Sounds like you need to buy one that's already 4 wheel drive. Way too much work to convert one in my opinion. Plus $$$ to get all the parts for the front end. I would try to get the tranny fixed and then buy a 4x4. I suppose you could buy a wrecked X that's 4x4 for a donor vehicle. It might have all the drivetrain pieces still in working order that you would need to convert yours. However, I'm not sure if the front end of a 2wd X will accept the pieces from a 4wd -different frames maybe?? Maybe one of the other guys can tell you this...

Ok. While it has been garaged (since like early March) it was leaking tranny fluid. The other day I put some stop leak in there, some more tranny fluid, and drove it around. After 2 days, there has not been a leak. If i pull that tranny pan will I be dosed with fluid?

So when I unscrew the some 25 bolts, its gonna go all over? How would you do it so I dont get it all over the place?

Cool thanks BB. Any idea how much a trans filter costs? An while I pull that pan, anything else I should look at?

Check the filter to see if it's clogged. Inspect the edges of the valve body gaskets to see if they are cracking, and check the torque of the valve body bolts. The prices of filters, and gaskets vary. Check WWW.TransmissionPartsUSA.Com or any local auto parts store.
