Bought a 1991 explorer 4-door, 4WD, EB last weekend. 207k miles. Very inexpensive.
Transmission is bad (I think). By 'bad' I mean that when you step on accel. pedal, Expl. moves but only very slowly w/ lots of engine revs. Lots of slipping between motor and rear end. No reverse.
Expl. had 1 gallon of excess trans. fluid when I bought it. Siphoned that out and not much improvement. Next day still no change. Towed Expl. home in neutral while engine running. 1 hour later while parking the thing, trans. sort of worked (big surprise).
I just read that a dirty MAF sensor can cause torque converter problems. I have not yet looked at that but will clean that before anything else.
Next, I plan to flush trans. and replace the filter more for grins than any expectation that it will suddenly work perfectly.
Possible explanation: Partially blocked trans. filer restricting flow until fully warmed up, oil then thinner, so sort of works when hot? Unlikely but worth a try. May also install a shift kit in the trans. valve body since I'm there anyway.
The road racing season starts this weekend so cannot look into this until next week at soonest.
