hello everyone, I am a new owner of a 1998 explorer xlt 4wd 4.0 sohc. I paid a paultry price for it because it has 147k miles and there is no reverse. I am hoping to get it working this weekend. After reading glarier1991 immense knowledge of trans, I feel I have an expert to help me. I am going to try to find him and post my situation and ask for help. Great site everyone, it is a very, very helpful tool. Keep up the good work:exp:

Welcome to this forum! You came to the right place for transmission help. Do you have manual 1st? The low/reverse servo inside of the transmission engages this band. There is another part called the reverse modulator spool which could be stuck. This part is located inside of the valve body.

how do I chack for manual reverse? I put it into 1 and the back right wheels spin.

Since it is up on jacks, the only indication I have that it is working is that when I put it into 1, the back right wheel engages and when I press down on the gas the wheel spins faster, so I guess 1 is working. What else should I do?

Lets keep everything in your other thread in the transmission section. As previously stated, check the reverse modulator spool inside of the valve body. Information on this procedure is outlined in the 5R55E valve body rebuild diary sticky which was written by Glacier991. It is located on the top of the transmission section.
