Hey everyone! I bought a 01 Explorer XLT 5.0L AWD with Limited Slip Diff.

I recently installed Rancho RS 9000X shocks at all four corners.

It has stock Goodyear Wrangler RT/S tires (P235/75R15). I would like to upgrade to a larger size and more aggressive tread tire but have been having problems with tire dealers and websites (tirerack) in getting past the Ford disclaimer on limiting only OEM size for replacement tires due to all the rollover lawsuits and controversy. Simple question, what max. size tire will fit on this vehicle without going to a lift kit and where can I purchase without any hassles? If needed, I would add spacers.

One other question, perhaps my only disappointment in the truck is the lack of front tow hooks and the inability to get aftermarket tow hooks that fit. Apparently, no aftermarket company makes a bracket that attaches to the frame so that tow hooks can stick out through the lower bumper opening that supplies airflow to the A/C and oil condensers. About to have a machine shop fabricate brackets based on my own pattern. Does anyone have any ideas on other options?

As for the tire buying, I told Costco that they were to go on an old jeep project that I was working on and simply had them mount them on rims for me. You could do the same for the online tire shops. As for size, most people can get away with a 31x10.5 inch tire without rubbing, but all trucks are a bit different. If I were you, I would try, and if they did rub, you could just do a small tortion twist for an inch up front, and add some shackles or an add-a-leaf in the back. That would be about an inch of all around lift for under 100 bucks (thats including a front alignment after the TT).

You can put tow hooks on. I mounted mine straight to the frame, and they sit just below the bumper, but I have no airdamn on mine. Others have fabricated different solutions, just use the search feature. Good luck.

Check the info on the wheel and tire forum here. It says that the stock 2001 Ex can take 31x10.5 tires on 15 inch rims. I have sen 255R15 tires on stock Explorers, but I don't remember how tall the 255's are.

On tow hooks, do a search to see what others have done. Some have bought the GM horizontal tow hooks from Chevy dealers.
