92 explorer xl
I drowned a 92 explorer. Pulled the plugs out, went to turn it over, and the starter just spun. Tried to turn crankshaft pulley with breaker bar, and it's seized. My question is if I get another explorer the same generation do I have to swap the computer too? Also I used to have a 96 and it seemed to have more power, does the 2nd generation bolt up to my 5speed if I swapped the computer in too? I definitely want a 4.0 in it, just not sure if I want the vin e or x. The x was really easy to rebuild when I put new heads on it 6 months ago, but my 96 was an e. I have a month to get this back up so anything helps, thanks.

All the 91-95 and possibly newer, OHV engines will work in your truck, with your 92 computer and harness. To be absolutely sure, just put all the 92 sensors and stuff on the new engine.

The only way you would have to change the computer, would be if you wanted to retain the cali emmisions of a 94-95 and some 93 OHV engine. The later engines can be changed over as the only difference is the cam sensor. If you went with the SOHC, you would have to change the harness and the computer. I am assuming this is the engine in your 96?

The 92 trans should bolt up perfectly to any of the OHV engines, but it is my understanding that the pattern to the SOHC is slightly different by 1 bolt hole.

If I were you I would find a good running 91-94 engine and swap it in using your 92 computer, harness, and other parts. That would be the easiest i think.

What about the EGR? My 94 was swapped with an earlier engine without an EGR and it blows CEL codes all the time.

Should that person of swapped the computer with the 94 so it wasn't trying to run an EGR?

The engine has no EGR, but in the engine bay the wiring is still there for it on my truck.
