1994 Ford Explorer XLT
I just purchased a 1994 XLT, 4.0, Automatic, 4X4. Got it for a good price, or did I? I knew going in that the 4X4 did not work, and the gas gauge always read empty but otherwise it seemed to be running pretty well and had passed emission testing last year. Now the rest of the story. I figure the 4X4 shift motor is not working and thanks to a thread on here I am going to remove it and attempt a repair. I pulled the fuel tank and replaced the sender and fuel pump but I should have done more reading here first since the real problem was the anti-slosh module. I tore apart the dash and did the bypass procedure and now the gauge works. I had to replace the heater hose next to the temp sender and now the leak has quit but I have a fluctuating temp gauge. I also replaced a burnt out bulb in the dash and to my surprise it was the check engine light. If I have tested it correctly the code is 214. I seems to be running ok so I am not sure what this will entail. It needs tires and some other things. I paid $500 for it and have put another $150 into it. Was it a good deal, not so sure. I like the body style of the 1st gen and it is easier to do lifts on then the later generations and since I am going to use it for hunting etc. I thought it would be a good choice. What do you all think?

Anything you can drive for $650 is a good deal ;).

I hope you can get the shift motor fixed. In a pinch you can select any range in the transfercase by turning the shaft that the shift motor normally turns, with a vicegrip.

Welcome to EF! You can also get a Shiftster to manually shift your transfer case.
The Shiftster...

Then later, after you rebuild your shift motor -- you can keep your Shiftster in the console, just in case you're out on the trail and the motor goes out.
