To make a long very painful story short....I replaced my plugs and wires. Used autolite iridiums and the basic duralast wires. All were gapped correctly. I now have a service engine soon light(not blinking). Did unhooking everything mess with the computer? Any suggestions?

Go to a parts store and have the code read. Its usually free. How is the car running?

There was a thread on here a while ago about someone that got the wires mixed up due to the different firing order:

"The 4.0's firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6, and Ford numbers their cylinders differently than GM and Chrysler...Cylinders 1, 2, and 3 are on one bank, and 4, 5, and 6 are on the other"

Haynes manual will have the diagram of the coil vs cylinder locations.

Light stayed on for 2 days. First time I got on the interstate it went off. Maybe the computer just had to work itself out??? My wifes Volvo did the same thing after tuning it up. Anyone have a similar experience?

May have nothing to do with changing spark plugs. A loose gas cap can cause "Small Leak" code, when you re-tighten gas cap, code will self-clear after a few "drive-cycles". You could get it scanned with a good code reader, may tell you "history codes" generated in past, but since corrected. If its a P0440 or related, check the gas cap, EVAP system vacumm hoses.
