Has anyone thought about putting a 3.73 rear end on a 93 X? I want to do it, any suggestions or ideas where I can get one or what kind to get?

When I upsized to 31" tires, I had my gears changed from 3.27s to 3.73s, giving close to the stock 3.55 ratio.

You basically have 2 options: just get the gears changed, or change the entire axle. A gear swap can be a bit pricey, as it has a high labor cost, total it can be $400-500 per axle. I say per axle cause you need to do both if you have 4wd. An axle swap is sometimes a better option on older X's cause you can often find a good axle for cheap and you might even find a later one with disc brakes and get those too.

There have been many threads on gear and axle swaps, I'd try hunting around the site also for more info.

Change the entire rear end out. I used to have a 3.08 open carrier drum brake rear end, and I bought a '97 rear end with 3.73's, a limited slip, and disc brakes.

The whole project ended up costing around $700, which included new rotors, calipers, pads, brake lines, synthetic fluid, etc.

It's actually a good deal when you think of all the upgrades you get at once.

The job isn't very hard, just a little time consuming.

Good luck!

so a newer expo's rear end will swap underneath a 1st gen? outstanding.
