I had to replace the OEM alternator and tension pulley in 95 XLT v6 so I put in a 130 amp replacement in. Question is when i pulled the original tension pulley the wheel spun very freely with one finger push and I mean it was still spinning at 30 seconds. The new tension pulley would not spin for even 1 second or two and was very stiff. I figured it was new so I installed it.

IS that new pulley wheel supposed to be hard to turn ?

Thanks everyone.

I shouldn't be difficult to turn, but it should not spin freely when new because there is grease in its bearings. This a good thing.

balancer may have separated. Crank is turning inside part of pulley, outer part is slippinh on the rubber between them. If you pull the belt you may be able to separate them by hand. if so time for a new one.

This can happen and while the belt is off he might as well check it, but not sure what does this has to do with the OP's question about a new tensioner pulley?

thank you Ill have time to stop at the shop where I bought it and ask them to see another one so i can see how it moves.

I will update.

In the meantime I bought a 96 Eddie B for 800 bucks. No rust and 4wd in Michigan is a thousand bucks anyways. Just another project. I will post some before and after pics when I get it cleaned up.

A new original Motorcraft tensioner pulley should not spin as easy as a used one. I changed mine 2 months ago and I had the same observation as you. Do not worry about it.
