2005 Explorer XLT 4WD
Hello all. I have a 2005 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD 4LV6. My current tires are BFgoodrich p245/65r17 105T. the tread is wearing thin and need to be replaced soon. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on a set of tires to replace these with. i was over at tirerack and apparently these showed up as the best choice but i wanted actual 05 explorer owners input before i pull the trigger.

here is a link to the tires

here is the quote provided to me

what type of driving do you mainly do? where do you live? those questions play a factor in tire decision.

its just a local driver. i live in pennsylvania. i dont do offroading or muddy terrains. want somethingthat will work well with rain/snow. a overall good tire i suppose. i am up for suggestions

The web links you supplied for the new tires you are considering isn't working, it says "page cannot be displayed" when I clicked on each one.

I have the same year and model Explorer as you and back in June, I bought a set of Bridgestone Dueler P245-65R/17's HT 689 from Wal-Mart. They have a 60,000 mile tread wear warranty. I like these tires, they ride great and are quiet. I've only had one chance to use them on snow and ice so far this year, not much snow in the Buffalo area so far this winter, but they worked fine, especially in 4x4 high mode. I paid $154 per tire, plus $11 per tire Wal-Mart installation charge which includes 4 new valve stems, lifetime tire rotation and balancing. Total for everything was just over $660 + Tax. They also had 18 month zero interest financing using a Wal_Mart credit card at that time and probably still do if you want to go that route to pay for them. Just ask about it at the counter.

General Grabbers. Great for snow/ice/mud. Good price.

sorry about the links seem they time out quickly. the tires were the 245/65/17 firestone destination LE2 60k mile warranty suv/cuv tire article number 97997. load index 105 speed rating t.687 for 4 tires with insall alignment free lifetime rotation valve stems state enviro fee and scarp tire recycle fee

I have the same size on my 06 xlt and I just got firestone destination le2 and they are nice. Haven't used them in snow yet but they are great in the rain.

I'd go with the General Grabber, Hankook Dynapro ATM, or BG Goodrich Radial T/A. For the price/value, I'd choose General or Hankook.

The General Grabbers are also very quiet on the highway, if that's a concern.

I own a 2003 Explorer XLT Sport 4WD with 170,000 miles. The original equipment tires were BFG Rugged Trail. They only lasted 43K miles. I replaced them with Michilin Cross Terrains. The first set of these lasted 60k, had some tread left but I replaced with winter coming. The next set lasted 67k. I rotate the tires every 5k miles. I just got another set of tires. With 170k, I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend $700-800 on a set of Michilens again, but if I had, I would have gone with the LTX M/S. Read the reviews on the tire sites, they are almost universally rated high. Some people get over 100k miles on them. I went with the Fortera HL and got them at my Ford dealer. They did beat the price of my normal tire store, plus I got $140 in rebates (including $70 for getting and paying with a Ford service credit card) plus another $25 into my Ford Owners Advantage account. Net price around $350!. Now, as far as the customer reviews go, they are only so so. About half the people say they only get 30k miles out of the tire despite a 60k rating, the other half say they are fine. But I figured for half the price, these should get me to at least 200k miles on my vehicle which is my goal. Good luck

Great information so far. I'd really like to see a few more reviews or suggestions before I pull the trigger thanks all!!!

I just purchased a set of Hankook Dynapro HT RH12 235/70R16 tires for my 2005 Explorer 2 months ago and so far I am very happy with them. I have had great tractions in rain and snow so far here in Wisconsin and they come with a 70K mile warranty. Was able to pick them from a local tire place for around $550.

tires

I have the Bridgestone Duelers A/T revo 2 and they are great in the snow and rain. The last set I had on the wives jeep had 85k miles on them and still had no issue in wet and snow.

Cooper Discoverer AT3

These tires flat out amaze me for all conditions. Snow, mud, dry, wet they are incredible. I live in a valley to a river and I can climb any hill any time it is fantastic. 245's are taller than stock...not that that is bad I am just telling you that in case you didn't know. 235's are the stock height.

3rd gen Explorers came with both 235 and 245 tire sizes as well as 16 or 17 inch rims. My door tag for the stock tire size says P245/65R-17's.

You're right I forgot they had 17in rim models. Sorry for the misinformation.

What the book and dealers will tell you.. Yes no matter what do all 4

My opinion. If they are within 30-40% tread of each other than no...
so like i would run one set at 100% and one set at 70% or one set at 50% and one set at 30%

Disclaimer: If you somehow ruin your truck from this don't blame me. This is meerly my opinion based on research and my understanding of the way the Borg Warner T cases in these Exes work.

I have Bridgestone Dueller H/L Allenza's on my wife's '04 4x4. Very happy with them so far. Put them on about 4 months ago. We have experienced 1 snow/ice event here in Middle TN so far and we had no issues driving around using 4x4 high. Roads were basically solid ice btw!! I had a set of the Destinations LE2's on my Sport Trac briefly but did not like the ride. While the ride on the highway was ok handling suffered. Too soft for me. Swapped to the same Dueller Allenza's for the Trac and have been very happy with them.
