I have no clue what happend. I love my car some much it is in perfect condition. It is a 93 Ford Explorer 4X4 Eddie Bauer Eddition with a 4.0 V6.

Now what happend was that I was driving to a friends house. As I was pulling up to a stop light and applying the brakes my car just jerks and dies. I put my hazards on and I tried to start the car and it started and then I tried putting it in gear and it died. I put in neutral and rolled it back in the 7-11 at the corner and waited.

So basically I'm asking what caused this to happen? What is it that is making this happen? How can I fix it? How much will it cost? Also did anyone understand this?

Welcome to the site. Unfortunately this is a pretty vague problem. How many miles on it? Will it start and stay running in park and neutral? If it will run, but not in gear I would guess it to be a transmission/torque converter problem. If it runs the same in gear and park, I would guess it to be fuel related, or electrical.

Ummm it has 142,000 miles on it. It doesn't stay running in gear. It will idle in Park and neutral but not in the forward or reverse gears. Thanks so much.

Was it shifting well prior to this? I'm not much into automatic transmissions, but there are some members here that are good with them. I'm sure some one will be able to point you in the right direction. Did you try 1 instead of drive? I may have read of this problem before being a torque converter that wasn't unlocking doing this, but I am not 100% sure.

It was running like a dream before this. Yeah I tried all the lower gears too. Yeah my friend (mechanic that helps me on my rx7 was in the car with me actually). He told me what was happening is that the clutch in the torque converter is locked up. He said you let it sit it might pop back in to place but he wasn't sure.

Things to check before you implicate the TC..

When was your fuel filter changed last?

THis can also be a problem with the idle air control valve, even though its in gear. It is a notorious ford problem, not a big deal or expense to change. The IAC allows some air in when you take your foot off the gas and allows starting without touching the gas. If it sticks the car dies, usually in all gears but not always. Would the car stall if you gave it a bit of gas while you shift? It looks like a thick cylinder that is attached to your intake with two screws. Maybe take it out and clean it with some throttle body cleaner.

welcome to the forum and sux bout ur explorer

Well then, my first guess would be the torque converter. Looks like the trans will be coming out.

Umm the last time I was going to change my fuel filter was the day that it died. How often does that happen.lol. I went about 20 miles to a friends house so he can change it but we ended up going to pick up his engine lift from a guys house and that is when it stalled out.

So the things I need to check before I get to the conculsion that it could be the TC.
is IAC and Fuel Filter

...I've worked on 2 with similar problems this year alone.

one of them: the TCC solenoid keeper/bracket broke and the solenoid fell out. why the bracket broke is beyond me, musta been mechanic (before me) error. you have to drop valve body to put the keeper back in....

the second one: had to pull the valve body to find the problem. a spring in the TCC solenoid bore was broken, keeping the converter locked up.

from those two experiences, I'd second Brooklyn's post: check the TCC. even if it checks good, I'd still drop the valve body and check the TCC bore/and/or all the bores in the valve body before I dropped the tranny and blamed the problem on the Torque Converter.

......most of what others, locally, diagnose as electrical/solenoid problems wind up being mechanical in nature. I'm just an old mechanic in the modern world, but I have spent the night in a Holiday Inn Express.....lol

........jjf

Well if there is any other things that it could be please let me know.

Bad news the transmissions shop said it has internal damage so it looks like I have to get another one. So does anyone know where I can get one for about 300 to 400 dollars.
