I just purchased a 98 Sport today for 3k. It was an Ebay item that looked really good. The problems I'm having are very low temperature reading from the gauge. Secondly I'm getting vibes from the rear that are intermittent. Lastly I'm getting a "clunk" noise when I come to a full stop and occassionally when taking off from a full stop. Oh and one more...I get a ticking noise from under the hood when accelerating during hihway speeds. It almost sounds like an air leak of some sort (manifold?) Any suggestions are much appreciated.

First, welcome to the site. :) You can find all of the answers to any Explorer related problem here. Second, this is the 911 forum. As in 911=emergency. None of these problems are urgent. Get a new t-stat. Get the tires balanced. Do a search for "slip yoke". It is on the driveshaft and is supposed to be filled with grease. The ticking may be an engine problem with the timing chain tensioners if it's a SOHC. Not cheap if that is what is causing the noise, although it is a common problem. If you post another non emergency thread here, it will likely get ignored.

That was a friendly welcome  ;)

Yes, this is the Emergency forum, read the stickies at the top of each forum to determine where yours should go.

I'd definetly check out the T-stat. Simple fix.

How many miles does it have? What motor? Auto tranny? 4X4? We need a little more information than just the problems.

Well thats the biggest gripe recently about the Emergency forum.. People don't read the rules before posting there.. Just check how many posts are moved because they aren't considered an emergency.

did anyone ever think to mention the ticking could also be the octane of fuel(spark knock)?????

If it detonating, than there is probably carbon deposits in the combustion chambers. The SOHC usualy runs fine on regular. Scootr, do you know what motor you have? What does the plastic gaurd on the top of the motor say? Does it sound fine on a cold start up, or is there more noise than a "normal" motor?
