New Used A4LD

I have a '91 Ranger 4.0L 4x4 with bad A4LD. I found a used one that is supposed to be in good shape, but how to tell? I'll pull the pan and change the filter, but what else can I do?
Also the tranny came with a new torque converter; the manual says to mark the orientation of the converter before removing, but what about a different converter?
Lotsa questions, this is my first post, thanks for the help

Unless someone else knows more there isn't a lot you can tell from the outside.

the most common thing looked at is the fluid. Is the color nice and red or brownish? Especially, does the fluid smell burnt or not?

Some other things........ Some guys won't reinstall with out replacing the front seal and if it's got lots of miles on it some guys insist of replacing the torque converter bushing as well.

There's people here who know more than I do about these A4LD's.
