Newb here looking at getting a 1999 Explorer XLT V6 4x4. 199K miles, rebuilt trans 2 years ago. High mileage concerns me but it runs good and seems to have been properly maintained.

These motors were built for alot of miles as long as you take care of them and keep that oil changed. GL:salute:

SOHC - Timing chain issues, 5R55E transmission - rebuild around 100,000 miles. Two big issues with 2nd gens that I know of.

Thanks for the info. The trans was replaced 2 years ago, about 30K. Not sure about the timing chain. I didn't notice any slack sound at speed or idle. Some tapping noise ala valves briefly, but only at idle.

Welcome!

Usually light ticking like that can be fixed with some seafoam and a oil/filter change with the correct weight oil.

I run 10-40 in the winter and 20-50 in the summer. That tick you hear at idle, does it go away once warmed up? Is it simalar to a rattling sound? Make sure when you test drive it the vehicle is cold, start it up and with your foot on the brake put in in drive with you head out the window and listen for any rattling=Timing chain.

Good question as first I thought it was a slight rattling that I noticed on the passengers side. When I opened the hood it sounded more like valve ticking. Once the engine revved it went away, including at idle. I did not hear any rattling at speed per se.
