Hi all,
Been lurking for a while and this site has answered a ton of questions.I love it.

Just got a 92 XLT. Have had it two days. All of the sudden it just goes out of gear. You're driving along then nothing. Seems like if you rev the motor it pops back in. The transmission feels fine. It's tight and shifts fine. Is there an electronic part I should be having checked?

Am a female and it seems like if you go into a shop without some kind of education you are gonna get reamed.

The radiator has been replaced, and the fuse for the overdrive has been removed. Replacing it didn't seem to make a difference. Also, a relay(?) for the AC compressor has been rigged with a safety pin to keep the compressor running

Has anyone had this type of problem with it just dropping out of gear?

Be nice folks...I am still learning

Welcome...and good luck. I'm not a transmission expert, but I've gone through a few. Hopefully somebody who knows better will jump in here, but mine did that a year ago and it was very expensive. Never really found the problem, just got total rebuild.

Oh Boy

I was afraid of that. Thanks for the welcome and the reply.

Boy am I gonna hear it...I did have a mechanic drive it before I bought it...just my luck 48 hour later it's toast.

Was really hoping that with the electronics etc. there would be another possible cause. Looked at the articles and it just dosen't fit into any one description...

Like I said, I'm not an expert and it could be something cheap and simple. If you have a shop you trust, let them check it out, or wait around till somebody can help you better from here. There's a couple people on here that claim to be AL4D experts. Maybe try PMing them?

Welcome to the site and sorry to hear about the a4ld. they blow. You might wanna post something under the Explorer Repair Tech Modifications in the under the hood and driveline. They will be more then happy to help you asap. Good luck -TJ

Have you checked the fluid level? When you do, is it nice an red (clean) or is it dark and smells burnt? How many miles are on the explorer? Is it 4 wheel drive or just two wheel drive?

One clue is the OD being disabled. Thats typically the first thing to go in an A4LD (from my limited experience). When they go out, it slips and sends slivers of metal all over. That usually damages the rest of the transmission.

Its possible that the modulator vavle is shot (not as likely). Those are $20 parts (external), but give us some more inforation on the fluid first, ok?

Let's hope for the best for now. :)
