Hi all

As in previous post been looking at getting an X but beginning to be put off by all the bad reports on the net.

Know about the timing chains and not worried about dealing with that myself. However, also found horror stories about transmission failures.

Probably be looking at one with about 90k on the clock.

So, how much grief do you usually get from the auto? Are thay really that bad, or is it just exagerated rubbish ?

Just make sure all the gears change smoothly with no slip. When you put it in reverse, it should engage straight away. Most problems are to do with the valve body gasket. Its common for them to blow out in two places.
I'm just rebuilding a gearbox for mine. Not hard really with basic tools.
Have the engine idleing in neutral with your foot on the brake. Turn the gearbox switch and you should hear a nice healthy clunk in both directions as it engages/disengages.
I've had mine 15 years and I love it.
Hope this helps, Kev.

Thanks for that Kev, the vehicle that I'm thinking about is the grey one on Autotrader at the moment, (there are only 3 grey, green, white).

Any thoughts about it please?

If you are gonna buy a second hand car, you should always expect that it's not in perfect condition. That's why I usually bring my mechanic friend with me when I check out a car.

I just bought a 2002 XLT and took it straight to the transmission shop for a full rebuild, but the selling price reflected the repair and I just liked the rig too much to pass it up.

Take it into a transmission shop and have them hook it up to see if there are any codes, in addition to the above suggestions.

Looks very nice Andy, jealous of the later type seats though!!!!
Its one of the last ones brought to the UK. Think you could knock a couple of hundred quid off. But it does say a warranty. Check out what it covers.
If it drives nice, you're getting a lot of car for the money.
When all the other cars were getting stuck in the snow on a slope, my Ex just sailed past them and it was still in auto 4X4.
Go for it.
Where abouts are you?

We're just east of Lincoln, small town called Horncastle, so a fair old drive down to Kent.

It's not their own warranty, so might be next to useless. Might try and negotiate it away for a few hundred.

Where are you?
