I am now the proud owner of a '94 Explorer with 66,500 original miles. I'm starting to go through and replace fluids. I would like to run synthetic if I can. What weight would you all recommend on a lower mileage vehicle? Additionally, is it possible to change the differentials to synthetic also? Any particular requirements on those? Newbie appreciates your help..Thanks

Congrats!

Well, if I recall right the oil recommended for the First Generation is 5w-30. I myself run 10W-30 because of the heat down here, but for where you're at, 5W-30 should be fine and dandy. You could even go to synthetic if you want and save time and the amount of oil changes you do. Just research into it first before making the jump. But before you do regular dino oil should be just fine.

Yes, you can change them to synthetic oil. You speak as if it's a 4x4, so I'm going to assume it is. I'm not sure about the front differentials in these these, but I think for the back, in order to drain it you have to remove the cover, and then reseal it, THEN add the synthetic gear fluid. As for the specs, I'm not positive, but I think Aldive may have switched his to synthetic, so you might want to read through a few of his threads and see what he used.

The recommended oil is 5w30 ( I run 0w30 ). You will be happy with full synthetic oil. Be sure to use a high quality filter.
