Hey everyone

My name is Rob and I'm from Edmonton, Alberta Canada.
I'm a Mod over at BroncoII.org and BroncoII's are my first passion.
I have an 87 BII with some upgrades which can be seen on my cardomain site.

My GF talked me into saving a 91 XLT Explorer from the junk yard. It had a toasted tranny. That's been rebuilt and seems to be fine. Right now I'm have other concerns with it at the moment and hopefully I can find the answers here.

It gets ****ty mileage...around 400 kilometers to a tank of gas.
It's leaking or using oil pretty quickly. It's not puffin blue so I think it's a leak. Is that some trouble spots that I should check out on these things? I've had the computer scanned a few times and the only real problem that seems to pop is the MAF sensor. Could that be causing my poor mileage?

Any help with this stuff would be great.

Welcome to the site!

Does it ping under acceleration?

The MAF could be making it run rich.....try cleaning it first.

Welcome Edmonchuk! (Calgary here)

400 km to a tank is about par for the course. You are talking about a heavier beast than the BII. I've owned three Explorers ('93, 97 and a '00) and that's about all I get from a tank, even with mods. The X has never been known to get great mileage (unless you're this guy called "Aldive" who claims he gets 30 mpg). Most people get about 1/2 that.

This site is a GREAT resource. Almost too great. My very stock '00 Explorer Sport has been modded a ton since I found the site earlier this year. Pros: I love my X more than ever. Cons: I'm broke. ;)

Hey CB2, ( Winnipeg Here- yes it is beginning to get cold)

I own a 91 Xl and experience the same gas milage. I have only 150 000 KMs on my motor and it runs great to boot. Certain things i found that increased gas milage were first of all taking care of that leak because changing to sinthetic oil has its advantages and gas milage is one of them. But with an oil leak you won't hold on to it long. I found that the rear seal went on mine, look for oil drops ( fresh) where the tranny meets the engine and determine if it may be the rear crank seal. For the age of the vehicle, you can almost guarantee thats where it leaks. Also look at valve covers etc. As for MAF sensor, pretty easy, just clean the sensor with, well, alot of people use carb cleaner, but i would recommend a product called LPS contact cleaner, works great for me and does not create or leave residue. Anyhow, welcome to the site, you will find everything you ever wanted to know about the X here, but be careful, you will be bitten by the bug! And once you are, you will have an uncontrollable urge to Mod! Have fun, Dan

Welcome to the site from an :us: yeah try cleaning the maf like crank suggested, I had a similar problem with mine.

Thanks for the info guys. As for the modification bug well I already have it for my 87 BII so there will be no extras going into the X. That and I want to sell it since I can't drive three cars at once. The X is the worst on gas so it was picked to be sold. However insurence is less then half of what the BII was per month...may drive it for the winter and sell it in the spring...I'm driving it right now and will contiune to until it blows up or somebody buys it.

I've cleaned the MAF sensor already and had it scanned a few days later and it still came up again. I'm going to have it scanned once more in the next week or so. As for the leaks/oil loss I'll look into that his weekend and see what I come up with.

Again thanks
