This is my first post here & I have a question. My wife went to church this morning( I had to stay home w/h a sick 12 yr old) & says the o/d light started flashing & truck is making a noise,so I drove it ...when it is in gear it makes a rattling sound some what like a converter shield come loose but not in park or neutral, truck shifts perfect,& after I drove it about a mile the light went off but it was on the whole way home from church a distance off about 25 miles she tells me.I did a search & I didn't like what I read!Anybody got any good news for me? Tomorrow I'm going to go under it to see if a mount or shield is broke but was just trying to get some ideas of what to look for.btw I checked the fluid & it's not burnt or low.

p.s. it's a '97 explorer sport with 4.0sohc engine,4wd w/h about 90,000 miles & I changed the trans filter for routine maintenance about a month & 1/2 ago & there were no signs of metal or damage :( Scott

I had the same problem w/ my 95. It happened while I had the back loaded down w/ top soil and I was driving up a hill. Took it to the dealer and they had to replace the tranny. The tranny wasn't making noise though.

4.0 - see your other thread in Under the Hood. AND, going forward, you only need to post in one of the forums. Dups are not necessary and take up bandwith. Most people here read the new posts, so one will be seen and (as long as we have and answer) answered.

P.S. - I forgot on my other response...... Welcome to the site, even if we are all Asstecs all the time now!

Take it to get it fixed now. THe flashing light means someting is wrong with the tranny. Mine did that, and soon after, I lost all gears but 1st and 2nd. Had to limp to dealer and get tranny replaced. Get it checked soon.

ok,I got in under the"exploder" today w/h the wifey behind the wheel(e-brake on of course) & the noise is definitely in the trans area & only does it when in gear not park or neutral,I'm thinking it's the converter making the noise.I'm pretty mechanically inclined(build supercharged 'stangs & b.b. mopars) so I'm pretty sure I can do it,just needing to know if it takes any special tools or anything anybody out there try it?:thumbdown:Scott
