99 Explorer XLT 5.0L 2WD
Hello everyone! I post on "Corral.net" because I own a Mustang but I recently purchased a 99 Black Explorer 2WD 4DR with the 5.0L V8. It has grey leather, dual AC, running boards, and the 5 speed automatic trans. It only has 11,000 miles on it. I have headlight covers, a K&N, and a Flowmaster dual exhaust. Please tell me where I can get some performance parts. I'm looking for a cold-air induction kit and some underdrive pulleys. Here is a link to pics of my vehicles. The Explorer pics are on the bottom.

Welcome to the boards! You say your V8 Explorer has a 5-speed auto? I had been told that they were only available with the 4R70W 4-speed auto, if you've got a 5-speed, could you tell me more? I'm planning a V8 swap in my '93, and I'm looking at transmission options.

No smilies - can't add my classic message closer.

I didn't know I had it either. I thought it was shifting a 5th time so I was reading in the manual and sure enough it has the 5 speed. It also shows that some come with the 4 speed so it must be an option. Are these transmissions pretty strong or are they weak?

I really don't know how strong they are. I know the trannies they put behind the V6's aren't the greatest, but it seems that the later ones hold up fairly well. I haven't heard about the V8 trannies, hell I didn't even know there was a 5-speed for the V8. I know that Troll (a very built '96 V8, 347, s/c, NOS) replaced his 4R70W with an AOD-E, I guess for strength reasons.

An AOD-E is the same thing as a 4R70W. Ford just randomly decided to rename it. It's basically the same automatic that has been used behind the 302 since the early 80s. Troll replaced his stocker with a race prepped trans in order to hold up behind his 600+HP. The 4R70W is much stronger and more reliable than the A4LD(4spd auto) and 5R55E (5spd auto).
