1998 Explorer XLT AWD V8
Hello, just found this excellent site and registered right away. I planned on checking out the FAQ and perusing the message board as a "lurker" but couldn't resist.

I currently own a Mustang GT and recently sold my 1993 F-150 (for a Dodge Ram 1500 - BIG MISTAKE!). I'm just getting into Ford vehicles but am eager to learn.

Anyway, I'm looking for a used Explorer with a V8. I've looked at a few and think I may have found one to my liking (as long as I can get the price lowered):

2000 XLT AWD V8
52,635 miles
Black/Gray Cloth
Standard Equip (All Pwr, Light Group, Etc.)
Running Boards
Asking Price at local dealer $12,988

The Explorer drove and shifted very smoothly and handled well. The front end felt good and the appearance was very good overall. It has only one minor ding on the left rear quarter panel and one long superficial scratch running from the lower end of the right rear passenger door to the right rear quarter panel (very slight but noticeable). Two small coffee looking stains (one on passenger seat and one in rear seat). I'm obviously nitpicking here.

Any thoughts here? I'm shooting for mid $11k range and will be talking to another "manager" of the dealership tonight. We shall see.

I'd prefer an '01 model strictly for the rear seat tether anchors for child restraint but the price difference at the moment is unjustifiable. So maybe I'll wait another year.

Regards,
Eric

Wow.. my 1998 explorer sport costed around $13,500 off Ford's used lot back a year ago.. V6 4.0L SOHC... you're getting a hell of a deal from my standpoint at least. Not only is my truck and engine smaller, but also you have a newer truck with less miles (bought mine at 60,000).

Bah, if you ask me, that's an okay deal, you could probably find cheaper elsewhere, but remember, you get Ford's little warranty and stuff unlike buying from people or eBay.

Whichever you do.. you'll love it!

Draft,

Well the dealer would not flex at all after speaking with him last night so I'm continuing my search. According to edmunds.com, the truck is worth about $12,000 retail so they have to come down. I'm hoping they'll call me back next week when the end of the month is near.

I think I'll start looking at '99 models so I can stick to spending less money. I love the Bright Red color that was offered that year, you don't see it often. Usually, Toreador Red is the one you see.

There is a Bright Red about 40 miles from here but the ad is vague. It says XLT AWD V8 for $13,990 (even higher than the 2000 I looked at) but doesn't list mileage or anything. I called the dealer and haven't heard back yet so I assume it was a BS ad.

We have 3 cars so I'm not in a rush. I'll find what I want eventually. I'll sell my Mustang when I find an Explorer.

Eric

i think the bright red only came on the sports but i may be wrong. i have the dark red it does not look too bad.

Well no luck so far. Had interest in three different ones, ranging from 2000 to 2001 models. All three were initially rental cars according to CARFAX so I won't consider them. Will be looking at two more on Saturday, both 2001 models. This search might take longer than I thought.

Oh well. I will find what I want eventually.

Ok, still looking for the right Explorer. From the "if it sounds too good to be true..." category. There is one about 45 minutes from me. It is a 2001 XLT AWD V8 in Gold/Gray lower with leather interior, in dash CD changer, moonroof, running boards (all options I wasn't really looking for) with 21,000 miles. The guy wants $13.7k???? That can't be right. I repeatedly asked questions about damage, repairs, actual mileage, etc., and was told that his wife doesn't work and only uses it to drop the kids off at school (3 miles away) and really short trips.

The deal sounds too good to consider to be honest. What am I missing here????

Eric:rolleyes:

sounds pretty good. i think i might consider selling my explorer. My house is located in Long island. If i do decide to sell, it will be sometime in may june or july time. I have a 2000 xlt v8 black with 37k, with grey leather. full option. I have the whole truck painted black. You can look at my cardomain. I have everything to put back to stock. I have a dual exhaust that can be put back to stock. Intake ( have the stock as well) chip which can be taken out. THe stereo can be sold with the truck but prob not because of how much it is worth. Just wondering if you were interested. im not positive im selling the truck. Id love to keep it, but im possibly going to california for school, so i might get a mustang or something.

my god..you guy's are steeling EX's down there here 99's are selling for 18k not fully loaded..it's get's worse from there..heck 95's are still selling for 10k here..man you guy's got it good..or should i say cheap..LOL
