Hi,

I am a relative newbie to mods to my Explorer. For the record I have an '01 Sport trac and I have added a new Intake from EE and a new chip from Apten.

I have found alot of information on exhaust mods on this site, but I still am somewhat confused.

I would like to look at completing what I consider to be a stage 1 modification but I don't know too much about the exhaust system on my truck.

What things should I consider when upgrading my exhaust? Do I just get a new muffler? Do I need a new set of pipes? Should I put a dual exhaust in? What are the pros and cons of these decisions? What hp/tq and gas mileage differences should I expect?

I am also located just outside of Vancouver, BC Canada and I was thinking of going to a local Budget Muffler place to get the work done. Is this a good idea?

Thanks for helping.

Kevin

Oops,

I also wanted to add that longer term I was thinking about adding a Supercharger to the truck. What affect would the exhaust have and what should I consider?

Thanks again,

Kevin

go with a catback system if one is available for your truck...

Jim,

What is a catback system? Part of my problem is that I don't understand alot of the acronysms that are used on this site, such as MAF, TB, Catback, KKM. I am learning though and I appreciate your help.

A catback is usually a replacement from your muffler to the back of the truck will all new pipe (could big bigger or smaller, depending what back pressure and high/low-end you want, or you could keep it at 2.25" stock). These "catback" systems are usually made specifically for trucks, or can be custom done at local muffler shops (bending pipes, etc).

I believe there's a thread on the commonly used acronyms on the site in the "Gen Discussion", but just for your information, MAF stands for "Mass Air Flow sensor", TB is "throttle body", KKM is a drop in air filter (kurtzkustomz.com I believe). I'll see if I can find that link for ya.

Here it is, "Forum Dictionary": http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=49401&highlight=acronyms

A catback system means a replacement of the stock exhust system from the outlet flange of the caytlitic converter to the end of the exhust pipe (from the cat back).

What implecations are there for just replacing the catback and not going with Dual exhaust? Should I increase the size of the pipes?

I would like to make the best informed decision, but unfortunately I don't have all the info.

Kevin
