I have a 96 XLT 4x4 with 189K. I just had the tranny rebuilt for the 2nd time in 3 years. Now 2 days after I got it back My O/D light in my cluster is flashing on/off after driving for about 10 min. Also my speedo needle is jumping quite a bit and it has no passing power and feels like if I go over 55-60 the engine is working too hard. The shop that did my rebuild said all that has to do with a speed sensor on my transfer case. Is this true? I really don't trust anything this shop says.

Have the CODES run at autozone or advance auto for free. if you get codes then you'll have something to possibly throw at the shop.
1. get it looked at by a DIFFERENT SHOP
2. my speedo needle jumps a bit because i removed the dash to install gauges and did not use Dieletric grease on the cable (my cable is mechanical) i think on 95+ they are electronic. they may not have tightened the cable down right or something...
3. Lack of power in passing means lack of power. did it have power before you visited this shop?
4. why did you go to this shop if you dont trust them? If another shop tells you something is wrong get it in writing, then return to the origonal shop and ask them why the other shop says this is wrong if they supposedly fixed it...

About 5 months ago I replaced the front and rear seals and the filter. I was driving it about 3 weeks ago and it started smoking and all the fluid leaked out (front seal). I had it towed to this shop (cheapest in town, big mistake). After 6 days at the shop they told me I needed a new pump, torque converter and the clutches. My parents told me to just have the whole thing rebuilt( they paid). I was told the torque converter had grooves worn in it and that caused the seal to be destroyed. It had plenty of power before they go it. I took it back to them about the O/D light and they said its elec. and they didn't do anything to it.

I just had the codes run at a smog place and the only codes that came up were for a bad O2 sensor and a bad catalitic converter.

I trusted them before I got my explorer back.
