No 4 wheel drive

I just purchased a 1991 Ford Ranger XLT, EXT Cab, 4.0 Liter, Automatic Tranny, with 130,000 mile on it and the 4 wheel drive does not engage, the light on the dash does not come on for 4 wheel high or 4 wheel low, any suggestions on how to trouble shoot this? I was told there is a control box somewhere that you can press a white reset button and if the red light on the controller flashes the motor is bad and if the light stays on the circuit board in the controller is bad, is this a true test? Welcome to the forum. Try looking at the top threads here... the stickies... there is one all about rebuilding the shift motor.... review it and you may find your answer.
