no 4x4, only 3x4

i have a problem with my 96 explorer, i don´t understand what the problem is and i havn´t found it in any thread...

my 2wd works great, also 4wd auto but when i use 4 low i have a griding noise on the left side at the front axle... when i lift the car up (all the four wheel) and let the car run in 4wd low it dosen´t drive on right hand at all.

i have no experiance of explorer 4wd before so someone of you maybe can explain what to look for. i hope i will understand your question, i´m not so good in english.

Left side? Does your front axle have an axle disconnect just to the right (passenger side) of the pumpkin? Check and see if the noise isn't there.

yea, 96's have a vacuum disconnect on the front right side(passenger). it looks kinda like a box. maybe its not engaging for some reason?

i will lift up my car tomorrow and put some microphones at the axle and the transfer case to listen, a friend of mine was out with me today when i was driving and he thought that the noise comes from the transfer case. we will see tomorrow....

now i have checked my car again. the noise didn´t come from the front axle....it came from the transfercase at the opposit side of the yoke who goes to the drive shaft to the front axle. (at the drenage plug)

however the right wheel doesnt spinn in 4wd low...why is it two vacum conection in the axle? does it happend any difference between auto and low in the front axle?

no idea. since you dont have lockers you wont have a true 4x4, but i dont know why it wouldnt be spinning? unless there was some sort of binding in the front right when you have it lifted, making the left side turn (because the diff is open)
