i seem to have lost my four wheel drive, have you seen it?? when i flip the fancy electric automatic 4x4 knob, i get no hub lockup.i am not familiar with the explorers, and am looking for some diagnostic help. could it be as simple as a fuse?or maybe a vacum problem??

I've read that the auto hubs are alittle weak on explorers. Someone else will probably chime in to help. Are you sure it's not shifting into gear? How do you know? Those kind of Observations will help. Good luck.

I would check all your fuses under your hood and inside (usually on the side of the dash against the door, some X's that I don't know about might be under the dash possibly, haven't worked on every year X yet) It could be the switch itself too. If the light in the dash isn't even going on then that might mean the switch is dead and not turning anything on. Check the wires with a volt meter and see if any of the wires actually switch over. Another easy check might be a lil reset, this helped me with my 4WD lights blinking randomly, unhook your negative battery terminal for a few minutes(some say to also press on the brake, not sure what it does, but I jsut did it as a precaution instead of having to do it twice). Then hook it back up.

And I can say I've heard of a good amount of fords having weak auto hubs like L4CX said. I know the Ford Flareside trucks in the 90's had to be replaced a lot and many people put in manual hubs so they wouldn't have to keep replacing the autos.

Sorry for the long reply.
