I have an 04 explorer and am having issues with the Defroster. Basically almost no air comes out of the top vents, the ones at the windshield and the side ones for the side windows. Turning the blend dial to all the different settings does nothing, but I seem to be able to defrost the windshield the best by using the front/floor blend. Although after a few minutes, it starts to fog up and then ice up from the top down.
All the other vents work fine and blow great heat. I popped the cover over the windshield vents just to make sure nothing was "stuck" in there, and it was pretty useless.
Any suggestions??

Sounds like your defrost plenum assembly has the common broken linkage arm. Search the forum and you will find quite a bit of information.

I use a piece of plastic to wedge in there. One direction for defrost during winter. Other direction for ac during summer. All depends were the plastic piece that attached to the vacuum device broke.
Again search firums or google. Every ex suffers this ailment.

Thanks so much for the replies. I love my explorer, and am going to be looking for a new car in the near future.. any idea if this problem seems to continue with the newer models? Looking probably at 2007-2010 models.

Same issue on the 4th gens as far as I know. 06-10.
