- 2002 Explorer XLT
So I've lost the brakes to my 2002 Explorer XLT. This is the second time I've had this happen. The last time I pulled the switch apart and cleaned the contact points, cleaned it up and greased it per this forum and it worked again for like a year.
Brake lights started to have this intermittent issue where sometimes they worked and sometimes not, just like last time. Pulled the switch again and re-did everything I did like a year ago but this time it doesn't seem to be working at well.
What I have going on is that it seems as though the switch is not being pushed when I push on the peddle. If I grab ahold of the switch and rock it up and down the brakes lights would intermittently flicker on and off. After taking the swith in and out several times and testing I finally went and just bought a new one at Autozone for $13.99 (part #F4862 ) as suggested on this forum.
Now please note that this is not actually the one that AZ sells for MY 4 door XLT. They sell something that doesn't even look like the one that came on the XLT and it includes a wiring harness. Many people here said no, get the one for the Windstar, its the same as what you need for the explorer.
I did and they look identical.
OK so the new switch is in and it has the exaxt same issue as my factory switch. If I wiggle it around, it will start working for a few minutes.
Also I noticed if I HARD PRESS the break peddle to the floor (think slamming on the brakes) it seems to work but if your not standing on the peddle, you get almost nothing other than a flicker here and there.
If I pull the switch and bridge the two points on the wiring harness/plug, I get brakes on all the time.
I do have an aftermarket brake control for trailers with brakes. This has a slider lever on it that I'm able to use to engage trailer brakes, that does consistently turn on my brake lights. That is what I've been doing for brake lights.
One last thing I noticed was I wiggle the switch and it's working, I can hear it making a mechanical click and then I can hear the brake light solenoid clicking on. Then after a brake peddle push or two it stops clicking. It's like I'm loosing the sweet spot where the switch actually gets pushed.
I looked at diagrams, it's installed correctly the best I can tell. The brake actuator rod that connects to the brake peddle and touches the switch SEEMS to be pushing on the button on the brake light switch the best I can tell.
Thoughts? Suggestions? I'm lost!
