As the title states, I have no exhaust tone at cold start. I have a Flowmaster cat-back with an Original 40 swapped in. If the truck sits long enough to get cold, when I start it up, I cannot hear my exhaust at all until it warms up again, then it sounds normal. When the truck is already warm, it fires right up with my normal exahust note. Why is this? Pretty much everyone I know who has an aftermarket exhaust has a normal exhaust tone in any condition startup. Is this because the truck is just old, or is there something I can do to fix it?

What do you mean? Whenever the truck's running you should have exhaust going through. On a cold start it should idle a little higher than when it's warmed.

yea i know what your talking about. i use to have that when i had the flowmaster too. i put a glass pack on it and i can hear it a little bit at first, but not very good. im not too sure y it does that though.

I know that when the truck is running there is exhaust flow. What I'm talking about is exhaust tone. You can't hear the exhaust at all when it's cold. I also know that it will idle higher when cold but that doesn't really have anything to do with the exhaust tone. What I'm saying is, until it warms up, you can't hear the exhaust.

I don't get it then. I can hear mine whenever the vehicle's running. As long as exhaust is flowing through the muffler you should be able to hear it.

Well I don't. It's got me stumped too. I know it should be audible whenever the truck is runnning but for some reason on cold starts you just can't hear it till it warms up. Anybody know what's going on here?

So you get on the passenger-side outside and still don't hear it?

Well yeah, if you get right next to the tailpipe you can hear it. I think you're misunderstanding me. It's not COMPLETELY silent. Just nowhere near the volume that it's at when it's warm. Yes you can hear it outside next to the tailpipe but inside on a cold start you really can't hear it at all till it warms up. But after it gets hot you can hear it idle from inside the truck and while driving. Not so when cold. You think it could a clogged or worn out cat that's affecting the sound when cold? I'm about to replace my 2 cats w/ one high flow cat, so I know it'll be louder, I just don't know whether it'll solve this little problem.

I don't think it's a clogged cat, you'd have other problems with a clogged cat.

Yeah that's true. I don't know, I'm not worried about it, nor do I care all that much, I was just gonna see if anybody knew why it's like that.
