Well I've been through about half the No Start threads and don't see anything like this. My lovely young bride says it "kind of hesitated" the other day but she thought it was just ice on the road.
Now it flat won't start. Cranks like crazy, all lights and accessories work great.
No spark (pulled a plug wire in both coil packs). .8 lbs. fuel pressure at the rail, no audible fuel pump noise when key is in on position (either before or after releasing the fuel rail schrader valve)

This is a '96 XLT 5.0L with no "chip key", no aftermarket add ons and no codes. 146k and until this last week, ran better than the day it came off the line.

One thing, the Check Gauges light flickers while cranking. Never noticed that before but then again, never looked for it.

Any rocket scientists out there?

did you try resetting the fuel inertia switch under the passenger side dash, close to the floor. There is a little red button on top of the black box bolted to the fire wall try pushing the button.

If it's not the inertia switch and both fuel and spark are no-go; then I'd suspect the ignition switch, maybe computer: something that has a hand in both.

try this

That could be the ignition switch. Some cars have a separate terminal for the ignition/ fuel pump, or it may be routed though a relay (or computer).Their is also a roll over safety switch that shuts off the fuel pump (they tend to go bad if you off road sometimes). You may want to invest in a ford diagnostic code reader (at your local auto store).

Good luck

Thanks

Thanks all, that's where we're looking now ECM or electrical at the ignition switch.

Good news, she's alive and well. No power to the ECM, swapped the relay with the ABS relay,,,,VROOOOOOM. Apparently when the ECM gets no juice, it sees no reason to fire the fuel pump relay.

Swapped them back for grins, still starts and runs, ABS seems fine. Based on prior experience with the horn and wiper relays, replaced them both.

Since there are so many references in this forum to CPS problems, that's also on order. As soon as the ice flow in the garage melts that gets replaced too.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

Crank Sensor

What d'ya know, the mental giants at the dealer say "there's no Crank Sensor listed for that engine". The local parts store lists one but I'd rather go OEM.

I've seen several hundred references to the CPS on the 4.0, anyone have any first hand knowledge on the 5.0?

Thanks, Al

My CD lists it as item #47 - 6C351-Crankshaft Position Sensor
for the 5.0.
