Hi all, I've been browsing/searching around here and haven't found anything that fits my situation. Essentially I've lost the keys to my 99 mountaineer. I've called 7 locksmiths and all said the same thing, take it to the dealer. I've called the local ford place, they say they dont keep any codes past 10 years. I asked what my options were, and got the run around. So looking around here there's a ton of solutions when the dealer will help or if there's a locksmith capable/willing to help or if I have one functional key - but I dont. Any ideas?

You have a few options:
1. a good locksmith will have a set of master keys for ford (its 2 boxes of about 300 keys) which they try one at a time until they get the right one, then use it to cut 2 new pats keys and finally program your computer to accept them. He will need to bring out the 98 & 99 sets as its common for locks to run over from previous year production runs. Should run around $150 for call out, new keys, and programming. If the dealer had your information on file, they just pull the correct blank skipping the "try every key" step. This is the best option since you keep all the locks and ignition intact!
2. Have the ignition drilled out and replaced, rekey the doors and hatch, program the computer to new keys. Obviously this costs more as you are replacing parts and use more labor. Expect $250-500. Also, you will likely have 2 different keys when done - ignition PATS key, and door/hatch key.

Okay, a little digging later & guess what comes up:

You can enter your VIN to verify its in the motorcraft database. Go in person with your insurance card or registration and have them pull it for you. From what I saw on other websites the dealer is charged $8 by Ford for each inquiry.

Once they cut keys the PATS still has to be reprogrammed.

I lost my keys. Had it towed to a Ford dealership. Mines a 2000 but after $275.00 I got 3 keys. 2 programmed and one just to open the doors. Very expensive but I had no choice.

Goto a junkyard, find an ex or mountie WITH keys and with the same motor as yours and grab the computer, steering column, and door/hatch locks... Thats the only way i can think of to get by it yourself.. Or look online for a PATS bypass that doesn't require an extra or existing key.

Thanks all, good information. Will let you know how it all turns out.

Go to a good Locksmith. If the same key is used for ignition and door, they can pull a lock from a door and match it. You can use plain walmart keys, to open doors and start the car --- if you don't want to pay $100 for a beeper key, just put your key in the keyhole and turn it. Works every time. Using your VIN, your Locksmith may also be able to set you up with a new set of valet keys for a couple of bucks apiece.
