:exporange Hello forum!!! I've been having problems with not getting a temperature reading on my 94 4x4 XLT. The dial doesn't move at all. I have gotten some advice that I can ignore this problem if I don't have a check engine light on. What do you guys think? :exporange :exp:

An engine that doesn't warm up won't cause the check engine light to come on most of the time in an EEC-IV vehicle. But the computer will always be in "warm up" mode, which will cause low fuel mileage, could get gas in the oil, and I'm sure other things. It's probably not the panic "pull over and shut the engine off" kind of thing like an overheating engine, but still, I would fix it.
1st thing: Is the engine really not warming up? If the engine isn't warming up, then I would start with the thermostat.

i am having a similar problem. But my gague moves but never gets to the N in normal. It has done this every since i bought it last year. I know that the engine gets warm but the gague barely moves. I am wondering what it could be that is causing this

May be a bad sensor. If not the gauge itself is bad.

You realize you posted the same question twice ? I answered your earlier post. Maybe a moderator can combine or delete one of these ??? Change your T-stat.

I appreciate the input first of all. Secondly, the engine is warming up but some deductive logic tells me what mr shorty does...lol. It's hard for me to get around the fact that the computer could be getting acurate information and managing the engine properly. I won't ignore this although I am probably looking at a sensor and/or thermostat problem.

Easy way to tell if its the thermostat- drive around for about 5 minutes and turn the heater on. If the air coming out is hot, the thermostat is working fine. If the air is only luke-warm or is still cool, you need a new thermostat.

First replace the T-stat, then replace the coolant temp sensor. Little sensor by the T-stat housing. My gauge was just like yours. Replaceing the coolant temp sensor made it work agin.

Yeah, I better replace both the T-Stat and the Coolant temp sensor....I'm not sure if this is a do it yourself type of job or a job for the pepboys of the world. I am convinced by all of your excellent imput that it isn't the type of thing I should let go. Particularly with over 100K on this puppy.
