I have a 96 with 4.0 and 4X4. Transmission never shifter properly when I bought it so had it rebuilt. Tested and replaced most sensors on trans and still have issues with no overdrive and lights for O/D and 4X4 flash on dash intermittently. Tried to read codes and shows no active at this time. Have been told wiring could be an issue and was thinking of getting one from wrecking yard and testing before installing. Any other help would be greatly appreciated

Need to use a scanner that is capable of reading transmission codes, most cheap scanners wont be able to retrieve transmission codes.

Guessing at what might be wrong usually ends up being a expensive waste of time.

Will try with the Solis I have available at work and wee what I can find.

My scanner from harbor freight( it was the mid level one they offer) reads transmission faults since the transmission runs through the pcm you should get pretty standard codes for transmission problems I had the same exact issue (even after rebuild) and went away after I reset the computer so try that first.but that would be only temporary haven't had the problem come back after a replaced the internal transmission wiring harness.but like others have said sometimes you can throw a lot of money and frustration at something your not intimately familiar with and would be best to take it to a good shop that specializes in Ford's (like a mustang shop) could also end up being a bad pcm sometimes these things are best left to a well equipped shop with knowledgeable mechanics.

(My local mustang shop figured out a problem I had like it was a piece of cake that nobody else could including the Ford dealer)

And speaking of scanners I would highly recommend getting a quality adaptor and downloading forscan this is by far the best combo as far as it's capabilities for the money which could be as low as $20~30 if you get a good knock off that's compatible or about $70 I think for the adaptor forscan recommends beware the cheap ones especially under $20 most of the time there junk with crappy programming and will be absolutely useless.
