Hello! We have a 1988 Ranger 5 speed 2.9 V6. We can not get power to the fuel pump and we have no spark. Have changed the fuel pump relay and the EEC relay and the ignition module. I have read other posts and went out to see if the check engine light comes on. It does not. What does that signify? Still nothing does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Assuming your '88 has a functional check engine light ('88 was the first year Ford started putting them in), a CEL that doesn't come on with the key in the run position and engine off means one of two things (off the top of my head):
1) The computer isn't getting power.
2) The CEL bulb is burned out or some other fault in the wiring to the CEL.

The ICM is powered by the same circuit as the PCM, and the closing of the fuel pump relay is controlled by the PCM. When you have no fuel and no spark, my first thought is that you have some problem in the main EEc-IV power supply circuit.

You said that you've replaced the EEC relay, so we'll assume that is good. How about the fuse/fusible link to the EEC system? Is the relay closing? Is there a fault in the ignition switch/wiring?

If you don't have one, the first thing I would do would be to get a wiring diagram. I don't have any "quick" fixes (other than maybe the fuse). You're going to need to go through the tedious process of locating the break in the circuit.

Thank you Mr. Shorty

Thank you for your response. We did change the EEC fusible link it was broken and tested bad, but that did not fix the problem. The EEC relay is now closing, but the new fuel pump relay is still not getting a signal and closing:(

do you now have spark??

i've got to go but.

with key RUN position, check for power at the coil positive, TFI on R/LG wire.

while crankin check for power at TFI on R/LB wire

if you have power have TFI Module checked at parts store. if tests good you may have bad PIP in distributor

We have now replaced the ECC and still have nothing. I'm not sure what the TFI is I Know the TPI (throttle position indicator). She wants to roll over, she is just not getting fuel.

TFI - Thick Film Ignition module. on side of distributor.

PIP - profile ignition pickup - in distributor

Thank you for all your suggestions, but nothing has worked yet. We replaced the distributer today, we found that the TFI was not getting a good connection, still nothing. So far, new battery, new EEC, new TFI, new EEC relay, new coil. Now after all this time, it's not even trying to start anymore, it sounds like the starter isn't getting enough power either. The battery is new and we tried to charge it. I hope someone can help before my husband gives up! Thank you

did you run the checks i suggested in post 6??

for your last post:
what is the battery voltage??
does the engine crank?? or does the starter make any noise??
are you now getting spark, just not starting after distributor replacement??

Get a meter and start tracing back / testing things rather than "blindly" replacing things. During initial start "attempts", does your check engine light now come on after the "stuff" you have done???? If not, you still have powering issues...use a meter to check for voltage leaving the appropriate fuse and arriving and the ecc? relay (sorry but I only 96 drawings which use a PCM relay) which should operate to power things up.
