I am the new owner of a 98 5.0 AWD XLT four door, my fifth Explorer with no radio power and no overhead console display.

I have not started to troubleshoot the overhead console but have done the basics on the radio, which is the factory unit with the single CD slot in the dash, not the 6-disc remote type.

I do not have power to the radio at the multi-plug connection. The fuses (#20, #29 in the interior panel) are intact and test ok.

What steps should I follow to determine the power issue / problem location?

Thanks in advance for any assistance. :us:

Radio unit itself could simply be dead, and the overhead console display not working is very common due to bad solder points on the display board.

Best I can say is test the power AT the radio and go from there.

Is there power at the radio fuse?

I have power at the #20 fuse on the left side of the dash.

Is there a component or connection between that and the radio that could be the problem?

I do not have a wiring diagram.

free wiring diagrams are available here. use rrcc and rebsco to log in.

the place to start checking is for power at the device and work your way backwards to the power source. the two may, or may not, be related. the overhead console display being out is a common problem and is fairly easy to fix. the radio display being out is super common, but the radio still works.

Fix the overhead first so you can rule out if they are related.

Follow the sticky how to for it. At least I think it is stickyed. You can also search for overhead display. Has something like 48 million pages. Really simple if you have a solder iron.

Then look at the radio.
