Ive got a 91 explorer 4.0L 4x4 and a 90 ranger 4.0L 2wd. The explorer had a shifting problem and it leaked from the forward most servo because the snap ring thing was broken(how it got broken is a mystery to me).

So instead of fixing the leak and possibly the shifting problem i went with option B. Take the 2wd ranger transmission and make it a 4x4 transmission since the explorers transmission was sparkly brown fluid in it. And the Rangers was nice and clear red.

The Ranger drove 100% fine when it was driving it, and i droped the pan and refilled the fluid every 3 oil changes since i knew that these trannys had trouble and it was at 320 000 KM. I knew the trans was good.

After tearing both transmission down and putting the ranger transmission back together as a 4x4 I have no reverse. What did I do wrong here? Is it possible that I messed up something interally with the gears? Where should I start?

Did you replace the 2 teflon rings on the back of the pump? Or maybe be you forgot to install them? Also check for wear in the overdrive drum where the teflon rings sits. Not having a good seal in this area will cause a delayed reverse or no reverse. I've been there done that!

There was minimal wear on everything, expecially in comparison to the explorer transmission.

My thoughts doing this were, "disassemble as little as possible and replace nothing if possible" I didn't touch the pump. All I wanted to do was put my known good 2wd trans into a 4wd. This transmission worked 100% when i parked it(stopped driving it because the body cracked in half because the rad support gave out).

When i was done putting the transmission together there were zero left over parts, I was VERY carefull taking everything apart and assembling.

ok, went and checked it out some more. It works in all gears except reverse.

i tried to put it in reverse and wait for it to engauge on a level surface and nothing happened, i tried it with the vacuume hose off because i read on a few of other peoples posts that if they did that it would work witht he hose off but not with it on.(i also replaced the modulator while i had the tranny out, and yes the pin is in there)

im at the end of my rope here, id rather not take it back out if i dont have to and i would like to take it up north and off road on tuesday.

SOLVED!

I climbed underneith this afternoon and took the pan down with the intention of taking apart the valve body and cleaning it. But I didn't think that made sence.

So i took the reverse servo cover off to see if i could see the little shiney spot on the band where the servo hits. And no i did not!!!

I then realized what i had done. I bolted on the valve body and the reverse sevo while the transmission was standing up right on the belhousing. and that caused the band to fall forward and off the guides.

So I had the idea"Maybe i can pry it back into place" so with the orgional 4x4 transmission still disassembled on the bench i put the band in and tried to move it with a pick threw the servo hole. sure enough it worked.

Tried it on the new transmission in the truck and got it perfect!

Now ive got reverse on a transmission i spent $45 on for a module and transmission fulid! Now im ready to go up north and offroading!
