Just looking...
I've been looking at buying an Explorer for a while now, but have come across quite a few locally that have no reverse gear. Some of them are selling for next to nothing and being listed as needing a new transmission or a rebuild. Is this really common of this generation Explorer?

AC, I don't know specifically about the no reverse issue, but these trucks are infamous for transmission failure. Best wishes.

There are quite a few in our area also. Some at very low prices. I bought a 2005 with 114000 miles on it, a XLS, with no reverse and was not shifting well in forward. I paid more than I should have for it. I rebuilt the trans and it runs good now. There are some problems that there are cures for.

When I was checking out this a few weeks ago I stumbled some video or article with some guy saying how there is a fix for the no-reverse thing. Basically he said this wasn't necessarily a new transmission deal and a lot of people were trashing good trucks for no good reason.... I can't find the link to it now, but if I remember he was saying something about some part or module that you get to by pulling the steering column... It was probably BS but thought I'd inquire about it since so many of these things keep showing up on my local classifieds...

I don't remember seeing that one. There are a number things that can cause it. Broken reverse band-rear servo-solenoid pack-valve body and servo bores worn.
