I have a ford ranger 4.0L v-6 thats bagged.I picked it up from the dealership and on the way home the problem started.I was backing out of a parking space and all of a sudden I heard a loud BANG and the back of the truck jumped up as if I reved it in park and slammed it in reverse. The next day I backed out of the driveway and went to autozone, backed up out of autozone and drove home NO PROBLEMS.an hour later went back out of driveway and BANG the back end jumped up again.Thats it, no reverse since.any ideas on what caused this would be helpful.(also how do I know what kind of trany I have? theres no I.D. tag on it,is there anything else I can look for to determine what kind it is?4r44ee or 5r55ee) thanks!!!

Man this is a new one on me..... I'm somewhat baffled. Almost sounds more like a transfer case issue.

What happens when the vehicle is placed in [R]everse? Does the engine's RPM just go up and freewheels? If so, do you hear any grinding or crunching (like a manual car when you miss a gear on shift and grind the gears against each other) ?

I think that your reverse sprag busted and also the reverse drum is scored.
It happeped to me, I had foward gears but no reverse.

my truck is 2x4 so it's not a tranfer case problem.when I put it in reverse it revs but,it won't move. THANKS FOR THE REPLY.

Good call James. That would fit his scenario.

Welcome to this forum! Do you have low gear? The rear band, and servo piston are for low, and reverse. Drop the pan, and servo cover. You might have some metal parts floating around, and jammed in there.
