Hey guys I'm looking for a little brainstorming here with my 2000 Explorer / 5R55E problems.

It all started earlier this year with the 2-3 flare. I drove around with it for a while not a big deal.

Later after driving to the coffe shop one morning, when I was leaving, reverse no longer worked as did Drive. So I downshifted to manual 1 and it went ok.. shifted up to manual 2, still good. popped it into drive, slippped bad, so I turned overdrive off, worked fine. At 55 i turn overdrive back on and it's ok. I also had no engine braking in Manual 1 or Manual 2.

So i did some research and purchased a rebuilt Valve body, separator plate with bonded gaskets, filter and made the swap.

After the swap nothing really changed, except for the fact that I now have engine braking in Manual 1 and 2. After driving around and experimenting here's a breakdown.

Manual 1 is good and strong.
Manual 2, also good and strong.
Drive (with overdrive off) 1st is like neutral, though vehicle does try to move slightly, 2, 3, 4 seem to be ok.
Drive (with overdrive on) 1st is like neutral, though vehcle does try to move slightly. 2 and 3 are also no good, but 4 is weak but doable if necessary
Reverse is the same as 1st in drive. I can feel a bump of the tranny wanting to engage, however it barely moves at all, and has high rpm's.

When the transmission has cooled, Manual 1 and 2 make the vehicle "shudder" a bit but only until it warms up ( 2-3 miles)

Like I said, these problems came out of the clear blue. it was driving fine (except for the 2-3 flare) and all of a sudden, no more reverse or low gears in drive no grinding noises, no pops, nothing.. just kaput.

After the VB swap, I cleared the codes then drove it around and after the new codes popped in, I took it to autozone and they gave me 2. one was for lean gas (but could also be a dirty MAF), the other was P0720, which is the OSS sensor on the tranny.

I am going to replace the OSS sensor but I was wondering, where should I look for my other troubles?

From what I've read, I have good reverse/low bands since Manual 1 and 2 work great. I know different solenoids, servos, and bands operate differently when the od is on or off.

I have the ATSG guide so if you're referencing that, could you include the page number so I'll know exactly what you're referring to?

thanks.

Welcome to this forum! Start with pulling the pan, the 4 bolts on the low/reverse servo cover, then check the tip of the low/reverse servo for chips. If it appears OK, then insert a long phillips screwdriver into the servo bore hole, and check the low/reverse servo band to see if it snapped. It should have a spring action.

reverse tip

ok thanks. maybe I'll try that tomorrow. I was considering replacing the o rings and the gasket on the reverse servo since it is cheap money. Also I want to note that while in drive or reverse I do hear "clunks) from the underbody when i press on the gas. Clunks may not be a good word, but I took it as that reverse servo going in and out and the forward or intermediate servo going in and out.

Hi, I've been trying to sort very similar problem. Have just dropped auto and transfer box out to investigate, only has 30k miles on it but it has been shunted. Stripped transfer box perfect, just starting to figure how to strip main box. Got valve body out and what I assume is the 1st and reverse servo plunger (steel plate at the side of valve block 4 bolts) pulled piston and shaft out. Have stuck a crosshead screwdriver in the hole seems to have about 5mm of sprung movement, There's quite a lot of crap around looks a bit metallic, more than I would expect but I've never stripped an auto before.
Any useful feedback would be helpful but I will plod on regardless.
Regards Steve

having the same problem here. when i removed the plate with the 4 bolts the piston just fell out i have replaced the gaskets on the VB and now I have even weaker drive and even less reverse the reverse would work better with OD off now it doesn't work at all and in fact it barely moves at all in Drive with OD off. should that piston be pushed in till it snaps into something and whats a good mod to fix the fact Ford is too dumb to put a drain plug in?
