Hi I'm new to this forum, but i have a problem. I have a 97 4.0 l explorer. UK version. ( I say UK version because there are stickers all over every major component saying EXPORT.) it is fitted with a 5r55e gearbox and yesterday, in the snow, it lost reverse gear, It drives fine in all forward gears including low 1st, It just seems as though it is in neutral. reverse lights come on so i assume it is engaging reverse, but no drive....... Help:exporange:uk:

No Reverse may be a cracked sleeve on the center hub

Reddenp,
I have a 99 w/ a 5R55E that lost reverse also. You can do a search in this forum to read my saga, but the short answer I offer you is that it may well be a cracked sleeve on your center hub. My sleeve cracked and bled off enough fluid pressure that mine just freewheeled when in reverse. I have pictures, but there doesn't seem to be a way (I can figure out) to attach them.

Hello and welcome, come say hi in the uk section and post up some pics to.
Onto your problem. Transfer box is the first thing that springs to mind, sure i have heard similar problem being so. However if you search the transmission section i'm sure you will find loads of threads to give you options
Jan

Edit: Just found this Clicky. There is no solution as yet but OP is hedging towards the transfer case. Though have read a couple of threads about the possibility of no reverse if the OSS (speed sensor) is malfunctioning.

thanx guys. i've been trying a repair, First i got hold of a second hand 5r55e gearbox for £50 with no first gear on it, so thought i'd explore the posibilities of fixing it myself. after stripping out the valve body and the reverse servo and rebuilding the box ( with the gearbox still in the car), NO CHANGE..... I'm going to attempt fixing the first gear problem on the box thats not in the car and then put that one in, fixed...... sounds simple..... here goes.

Welcome to the site

Guys ITS FIXED................ how about this for a repair.... first i stripped the gearbox that i had just bought. I then laid out all the parts in order on the bench, then took my gearbox out of my truck stripped that gearbox and found the reverse band had broken.... so i replaced the band with the part from my other gearbox........ and....... hey presto everythings perfect. Wow I have never seen the workings of an auto box before, and i am absolutely chuffed with the result, im not scared of complicated stuff anymore just get in there and do it....

Just want to say thanks to everyone who posted comments, after reading all the stuff on this site, it gave me enough confidence (OR STUPIDITY) to attempt the job myself.
THANKS
