no start , no click

so, my wifes 2002 explorer some times wont start. turn the key and nothing happens. doesn't turn does nothing. the starter is a year old and was replaced because the same thing was happening last year. a new battery was put in at the same time last year as well. I replaced the ignition switch this morning and it didn't start. now when my wife turns the key and I hit the starter with a pipe it turns over. do you guys think that the starter has a bad spot already?

I would check the cable first. Every time you mess with it (smack starter or replace) may be enough jiggling to let juice through.

A little bit of corrosion (which may not be externally visible) will disconnect the starter.
