A faint "ticking" noise has developed on my 97 AWD V8. Occurs only when cold and on load, acceleration in all gears. Sounds like it is speed sensitive but can't tell if engine RPM or speed of vehicle. Stops when coasting and if shifted into N; even when engine is reved while moving or sitting still. After reading most of "noise" threads, changed air filter (standard one),cleaned MAS and checked all heat shields. Sprayed cleaner into throttle body AND THEN read the sticker that says not to clean because of a coating. Recently has new IAC. Otherwise, great vehicle and nearly no problems at 48,000. Thanks for any help.
PS: Always disappears when warmed up; just 5 minutes or 3 or 4 miles even in the 30 degree days.

Well I had the same problem.

My Best friend is a Master Mazda/Ford Tech.
[ASE Master Tech]

He solved the same noise.
If its the one i think your talking about.

Does it sound like a rattle.
Kinda like a can of pennies shaking?

Well what your actully hearing is a Pinging noise.
This is caused from carbon buildup.
To fix this you need to have them do an Injector Service.

What they do is flush the whole fuel system out with high powered cleaner.
[Run the engine on straight cleaner for 30mins]

After that to keep it from happinging sooner i would use Mid-Grade Gasoline. [89 Octane]

Hope this helps =)

E-Mail me if you need me to ask him anything else i would be more than happy too!

maybe

heh thats all they do?

Before going that route, you might try running on super-high (93+...or over 100 if you can find it) brand name octane fuel for awhile, and some Redline fuel additive cleaner..I dont remember what its called, and still have yet to use it myself, but I hear good things.

If you cant find redline products, the stp fuel injector cleaner in the black bottle is worth a try.

You might also check your spark plugs and wires.

I'll tell you what it is. It's your egr tube, it's cracked creating an exhaust leak. The clicking noise you hear is the leak itself. The tube runs from the egr(found at the back of the air plenum on throttle body side) down to your exhaust manifold. I had the same problem with my 5.0 explorer and thought it was the throttle body also. Later found the cracked tube and repaired it. Ford wants close to $80 for a new one. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the hints. It was the egr tube. One little pin hole. Probably a defect in factory weld. My local Ford mechanic new it immediately when I told him.
