I just tesdrove a 1997 Explorer with the SOHC V6.

First Problem: It idles rough, check engine light is on and to me it kinda sounds like a sensor problem! Is that typical for Expl.?

2nd problem: when I drove it there was a noise coming from the back of the truck everytime when I hit the gas. When I got of the gas and was just coasting it kept being there and then disappeared after 1-3 sec.
any ideas what it could be??? costly???

thank for any idea!!!!

Oh, btw, 4x4 seems to work fine. and it has 126kmls

For the first problem, get the codes scanned to see why it has a CEL.

Second problem, might be a bad bearing back there. Mine eventually needed a total rebuild, but I waited until it was howling!

first: He said, he is going to get the codes scanned... btw, what means CEL?

second: bearing, do you mean wheel bearing? shouldn't that noise be constant then? I don't really know, but it only came on, when I hit the gas... Can it still be a wheel bearing or did you mean a bearing in the axle? or so?

CEL- check engine light.

I was referring to bearings in the rearend itself.

oh, ok... now I got it.

Well, if it was a gear problem, would the 4x4 still engage and work properly? Because if so, then it probably could be a bearing in the rear end.

if anybody else has an idea...

Oh, and at how many miles did you get your rear end rebuilt? how much was it?
